Fornells

Although the commercial activity in this town is nowadays centred on high quality tourism , Fornells ia , in fact , an old fishing village and fishing continues this day. The town depends , both poitically and administratively , on the municipality of Es Mercadal . Although Fornells is only kilometres from the town of Es Mercadal , its character to its inland neighbours is entirely diferent to that of its inland neighbour.

The inhabitants of Fornells live in a beautiful part of the island , on the stores of a splendid natural bay wich measures some four kilometres long and up to two kilometres at its widest section , and wich , on some occasions , has been classified as an " inland sea ". The calm waters of the bay and the numerous small coves wiah are situated on this stretch of the coast make this area a real natural treasure.

The relationshinp between Fornells and the sea is such that , in July , a marine procession takes place in honour of the Virgen del Carmen ( as in Mao and Ciutadella ) . This consists of numerous small boats departing from the port of Fornells and sailing to the mouth of the bay. This religious commemoration is well worth experiencing personally , especially if you can talk the owner of a boat into letting you on board.

Port of Fornells

The town of Fornells grew up around the castell of San Antoni , wich was constructed during the 17th century and later extended by British and the Spanish . Unfortunately , the castle is now in ruins. It was also the British who built the defence tower wich is found in Sa Punta . At present , the consell insular ( Isalnd Council ) has completed the task of restoring the monument wich houses a small museum.

The gastronomy here is based on fish and shellfish and one of the most delighful dishes is the " Caldereta " of lobster wich is on the menu at the majority of the restaurants specialising in sefood
